Medinet Habu - The Temple of Ramasess III

Medinet Habu was built between 1184-1153 BC by Rameses III although the site has a number of earlier buildings constructed by Hatshepsut and Thutmose III.

Rameses III was Egypt’s last great warrior pharaoh and he had this temple constructed like a fortress. In fact the eastern gateway is in the form of a Syrian fortress known as a miggdol and the exterior walls are engraved with scenes of his wars with the Sea peoples and Libyans.

One of Rameses III’s palaces is located on the south west side. It was once decorated with glazed tiles some of which are now in the Cairo Museum

The inside of the second court is decorated with religious scenes some retaining their original paint work. But although the temple is quite well preserved the hypostyle hall is badly damaged and only a few truncated columns remain.
