Temple of Edfu

Edfu is dedicated to the hawk god Horus and is said to be the site of the great battle between Horus and Seth. For this reason, temples were built on this spot from prehistoric times, the earliest structures housing a statue Horus and constructed from wood and grass. The current building was made from sandstone blocks, begun in 237 BC by Ptolemy III and was finished in 57BC.

The great pylon is 144 feet (43.8 meters) high and 249 feet (75.8meters) wide and is inscribed with reliefs depicting King Ptolemy Auletes smiting his enemies.
